Year 4

Welcome to Class Newcomen!

Class Newcomen's name comes from the Newcomen Beam Engine, which is one of South Yorkshire’s finest surviving legacies of the Industrial Revolution.

PE!

This year our PE lesson will be held on a Wednesday afternoon. Please can you ensure your child comes to school in their PE kit. They will wear their kit all day.

The children will participate in an outdoor PE lesson unless the weather becomes too extreme to complete outdoors. It would be recommended that pupils have a T-shirt and shorts in case they become wet during the lesson.

Required PE kit:
A blue team Elsecar PE T-shirt;
A pair of black shorts, PE skirt or Skort;
A pair of tracksuit bottoms and a top for outdoor use;
A pair of trainers suitable for the playground and field.

Reading!

Please can you ensure you are reading with your child on a regular basis. We ideally would like them to be reading every day. This can be a mix of independently or with an adult. We ask that you write in a comment regarding how you feel their child has coped with the book they are reading.

Due to the ongoing pandemic, we are asking that pupils try to change their books on Monday, Wednesday and Friday because we need to ensure we are as socially distant as possible from other bubbles in school.

Any books returned are being quarantined for 48 hours before going back into stock.

If your child reads any e-books on the Scholastic Reading Pro website, this should be written in their reading records also.

Reading for pleasure!

We greatly encourage reading for pleasure. Therefore if your child is reading anything which is not their own school reading book, we ask they write in what it is they're reading and how they are enjoying this book.

We are currently finishing reading Demon Dentist by David Walliams as a class.

Spellings:

Your children will be sent home with 10 spellings on a Monday. Each day they will complete spelling activities to help them embed the recall of these spellings and understand their meaning. It is vital that these spellings are also practiced at home, ready for the spelling test on Friday afternoon.

Our topic this half term is...

Can abstract techniques be used in landscape artwork?

We are looking at Wassily Kandinsky's landscape artwork. We have looked at his techniques and his use of vivid colours. The children will be sketching landscapes of Elsecar and then using soft pastels and paint to show bold and bright colours in nature.

Times Table Rock Stars!

Please encourage your child to play on Rock stars, it really does make a difference! Times tables are recognised as essential to access many mathematical concepts and knowledge will be assessed at the end of Y4 by a National test. When it comes to times tables, speed AND accuracy are important – the more facts your child remembers, the easier it is for them to answer more challenging calculations.
Ideally they should be practicing their times tables 10 minutes a day but whenever they have a spare 5 minutes. Their log in details can be found in their reading records. More information about Rock stars can be found on the school website under the tab Times Table Rock Stars.

There is also a Rock stars Twitter page which is @ElsecarTT
