Year 6
Hello everyone and Welcome to Year 6!
Class teacher: Miss Upton
Teaching assistants: Mrs Harris & Miss Brooks
Reading in Year 6:
One thing we love to do in Year 6 is read! All children will bring home a colour banded reading book that matches their reading level and a reading for pleasure book to encourage a love of reading. We encourage all children to read for at least 10 minutes a day and record this in their reading record. Please see below some recommend reading books for Year 6.
Here are some books we’ve been reading recently:
PE:
This year our PE lesson will be held on a Tuesday afternoon. Please can you ensure your child comes to school in the correct kit that day. We recommend checking the weather before PE lessons to ensure children come to school wearing appropriate kit. Our PE kit consitsts of:
- A blue Team Elsecar PE top.
- Black/dark coloured short, leggings, or tracksuit bottoms.
- A pair of trainers suitable for the playground and field.
Spellings:
All children will bring home 10 weekly spellings on a Monday that focus on different spelling rules. We encourage children to practice these spellings in the lead up to their spelling test on a Friday. Alongside this, we also practice the Year 5/6 Common Exception words. In order for children to achieve the expected standard in writing, they must be able to spell most words from this list, as well as all from the Year 3/4 list. Please see these lists below to practice with your child:
Times tables:
Times tables are a crucial element of Maths that allow children to be successful in lessons and assessments. We therefore encourage children to spend time playing on Times Tables Rock Stars to increase their fluency and recall of all times tables up to 12x12. All children have logins for this game stuck in their reading records.
SATS:
This year, SATs week for Year 6 will be the 9th-12th May 2023. Please see the Powerpoint below with key information about this.
